ASL Match Day: Western Mass Pro Soccer vs. RI Oceaneers

ASL WMP vs RI 4_11

RI Oceaneers warming up prior to kickoff

On Saturday, the American Soccer League entered their second week of the 2015 season.  Our own Bryan_Speaks was present at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, MA to witness the match up between the Rhode Island Oceaneers and Western Mass Pro Soccer.  The match saw Western Mass far from their beloved Lusitano Stadium, where they regularly play their home matches as a result of the harsh New England winter.

The Oceaneers came out strong and completely dominated for long stretches of the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net in the first half despite promising chances.  Much of RI’s domination came at the feet of former MLS player Andrew Sousa, who was denied by only the post midway in the half.  At the 28th minute mark there was a sickening collision which resulted in Western Mass’ James Beeston out with a leg injury.  After this collision the remainder of the first half was chippy, and relatively sloppy.

Both teams returned from halftime strong.  Rhode Island came close to scoring in the 47th minute but WMP’s keeper Jose Silva made a nice fingertip save to keep it knotted at zero.  Western Mass struck first after an impressive goal by Francesco D’Agostino with a golazo with his back to net.  RI retaliated almost immediately but once again got denied by Silva.  In the 62nd min Western Mass increased their lead off a nice finish from Luke Perry.

RI never gave up, and in the 72nd min they were rewarded by Phil Towler with a beautiful shot from outside the box.  In the 83rd the game took a turn in RI’s favor as Western Mass was whistled for a handball in the box resulting in a PK, which Towler netted without issue. T he game looked destined to finish with at 2 – 2, until RI’s super sub Braima Samati scored seconds before stoppage time ending the match 3 -2.

The Oceaneers will travel to Maryland to take on the Evergreen Diplomats on the 25th of the month, while WMPS will face Mass United in Lynn, MA on April 18th.
