Beneath White Sands: The Fall of Pensacola City

Beneath White Sands: The Fall of Pensacola City
The National Premier Soccer League is really a league of haves and have nots. For every Detroit City FC, who finds a strong foothold and support early on, there are a several that never make it past year one.  In fact it can be difficult to keep teams afloat, let alone profitable. Sure Nashville, Tulsa, and Chattanooga do well, but not every team strikes proverbial gold. It is not rare to find teams folding either mid-year or at the end of the season.

Year One: The 2012 DITP Year In Review (and a look ahead to what lies in store for 2013)

The deepest desires of mine which drive this blog is a quest to uncover the overlooked hotbeds of supporter culture buried in the deepest recesses of 4th (PDL, NPSL) and especially 5th division (USASA) clubs.  The truth is, at this level, in this country, and especially in this region, these peak experiences are few and far between.  Spurned on by visions of small fields packed with vocal supporters and FA Cup-like atmospheres, more often than not I found myself alone or near alone in taking in a game.  This fact makes the efforts of the dedicated players who show up week in and week out all the more admirable.  They play truly for the love of the game, and deserve all the credit in the world for their efforts.  The standard of play varies so widely in the USASA games.  You’re likely to see anything from a rec league style assemblage of weekend warriors to players with significant professional experience, sometimes on the same field.  I regret I did not have enough time to attend nearly as many matches as I desired, and fell significantly short of my goal of 100.  The final tally stands at 32, 1 game short of a third of the way to my goal.  Read more
