It was a tough fought game on Sunday on Randalls Island in New York when USASA East NY region champ Greek American took on Massachusetts champ Battery Park Gunners in the two teams first ever meeting. It has been my great pleasure to cover the Maryland and Massachusetts US Open Cup state qualifying tournaments in 2012 for thecup.us I was excited for the opportunity to not only gather another couple USASA scalps for the DITP blog but introduce the US Open Cup in its formal format as the setting for the 4th stop on my way to the century mark.

Greek American on the break

Greek American Atlas is one of the oldest continuously running soccer clubs in America, having been founded in 1941. The team regularly plays its home games at the legendary Metropolitan Oval, or MetOval, arguably the most historic and possibly only traditional style soccer ground in America. They have also won the US Open Cup 4 times including three straight from 1967-1969, as also in 1974. Contrast that with Battery Park Gunners who made their first appearance in the USOC qualifying tournament this year, won the Massachusetts title, and booked themselves a trip to New York to take on the legendary amateur club. BPG Acquitted themselves well in the first half, but unable to organize any consistent threat in the final third of the field did well to reach the half 0-0. Greek American controlled the run of play in the second half, and BPG were lucky to get all the way to the 84thminute before the Boston clubs defensive lines finally relented and Greek American’s Chris Magaloudis netted a strike off a break, and with BPG’s spirits broken after their hope for a draw and penalties came up short only 2 minutes later, Keith Detelj, iced the game just 4 minutes from time to account for the 2-0 final.

Greek American had a nice little following of what appeared to be pretty dedicated supporters. In addition to the A side, the club field a Reserve team and an Over 30 squad. Greek American’s biggest rival is fellow Cosmopolitan League side the other major Greek club in New York City New York Pancyprian Freedoms. The two clubs play their annual derby on April 15th.

It was about 4 hours door to door, and thanks are in order to Joe and his buddy John for the transport. There was questionable Chinese cuisine procured via the Hunan Garden on the way back. I was too tired after staying up for the Revs glorious 3-1 win over LA Galaxy to produce much in the way of antics.
